United Nationalities League for Democracy

United Nationalities League for Democracy
   (UNLD)
An umbrella organization of minority nationality political parties established in 1989. Its 19 constituent parties, including the Shan Nationalities League for Democracy, the Arakan League for Democracy, and the Mon National Democratic Front, won about 50 seats in the May 27, 1990 General Election. Between June 29 and July 2, 1990, the UNLD held a conference in Rangoon (Yangon) and adopted a program based on federalism. On August 19, 1990, the UNLD and the National League for Democracy formed an alliance, but in 1992 the State Law and Order Restoration Council banned the UNLD, although it has operated in exile as the United Nationalities League for Democracy-Liberated Areas.
